solo tenor saxophone

6 mintues
written for James Nightingale
I wrote this voluptuous piece for Australian saxophonist James Nightingale in 1999. The piece explores two concepts that I was quite interested in at the time. The first idea is the particular multiphonic featured on the opening page. It is quite harmonious and has 3 different possible ‘in-tune’ chords that can be played from the one fingering – a tone, a minor 7th, and a 6th. The 2nd idea requires the saxophonist to play different rhythms in each hand. Two patterns are established, the left hand playing a duple rhythm and the right playing a triple rhythm. The ‘in-between’ notes that are created as a result create a 3rd part.
